Making the step from being just another face in the crowd at the O2 Arena or Glastonbury to becoming an integral part of a famous act's live performance may be smaller than you think with sound engineering courses.

All devoted music fans have once stood starry-eyed as they gaze up at an epic live performance from one of their favourite artists. Those with a more analytical ear will no doubt take in the sound composition and levels too, taking inspiration from the balance of guitar against vocals and drums against bass. For some, the technical aspects of live performance can make or break a gig and make all the difference to their enjoyment. Those with an interest in the mechanics of live audio can begin a career in the music industry by looking into enrolling on one of the recognised sound engineering courses available.

Live sound courses are a great way to build on the basics of music technology that today's students may learn at GCSE or A level, or through practical experience. After all, when it comes to live performance, there is no substitute for practice and experience in order to ensure a mind blowing show - and that concept relates to the technology behind the band as well as the live music they are producing.

Big name bands and artists are now followed by an enormous entourage when they tour. Live music has become the most profitable avenue for successful artists with the decline in single and album sales that the internet has caused. Live sound has become big business, with acts putting on enormous, extravagant shows at huge arenas and stadiums. Producing such a show requires a skilled team of technicians and engineers, most of which will have got into the business having passed sound engineering courses.

There are various roles within the production and transmission of a live concert performance that a sound engineer can undertake. Clearly there is an enormous amount of preparation involved in setting up PA systems, microphones, lighting and instruments. This can range from tuning instruments to setting the sound levels during a sound check. Rarely would you get a chance to be so close to your heroes.

The practical experience gained on sound engineering courses can help students learn how to react when things go wrong. You never know, one day you may find yourself running on stage in front of thousands of people to change Eminem's microphone lead or to pick up a stray guitar plectrum for the Arctic Monkeys.
