Perhaps the hottest hip-hop act to emerge out of Canada in recent years, "Best I Ever Had" singer Drake recently announced plans for his very first North American solo tour. The Away From Home Tour will kick off in Charleston, Ill. on April 6 and stop at more than 15 colleges and universities as part of the Campus Conscious Tour within its 25 total dates. Drake's trek will come to a close in Plymouth, N.H. on May 8 and will feature performances from New York synth-pop act Francis & the Lights as well as Canadian rapper/singer K-OS. Drake's solo tour follows his participation in the "Young Money Presents: America's Most Wanted Music Festival" featuring headliner Lil Wayne. Drake and Lil Wayne took the stage with Eminem and blink-182 drummer Travis Barker at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles on Jan. 31. The impressive collective performed a medley of "Drop the World" and "Forever." "Forever" appears in basketball star LeBron James' recent documentary More Than a Game, while "Drop the World" is set to appear on Weezy's upcoming album Rebirth. Rapper Kanye West recorded "Forever" with Drake, Eminem and Lil Wayne, but was mysteriously left out of the performance.
After the collective's Grammy performance, which was the final one of the night, CBS garnered criticism for dropping the noise several times during the performance. In the wake of the controversy, a spokesperson for CBS praised the MCs' gig but maintained to The Associated Press that the words simply had to be edited in order to meet broadcast standards. Said CBS' Chris Ender, "It was a rousing musical performance, but words were edited from the live telecast that didn't meet our broadcast standards. We have great respect for artists' creative freedom, but here are certain things you can't say, or sing, on television." Regardless of dropped audio, the performance was undoubtedly one of the night's most memorable.
Drake is attracting positive publicity for his upcoming Away From Home Tour, for which he has adopted an eco-friendly policy. According to Billboard.com, Drake has teamed up with non-profit organization Reverb, which promotes environmentally-friendly techniques, and "greened" his road trip by employing biodiesel fuel and biodegradable and recyclable producers backstage and on the bus. Drake's tour will even have an "Eco-Village," produced by Reverb in conjunction with Pretty Polly Productions. The tents will boast environmental and socially conscious groups teaching about green technology, educating about student carbon-offset programs and eco-friendly consumer sampling.
Drake's hit song "Best I Ever Had," easily one of the most infectious hip-hop tracks of the year, was nominated for two Grammys, for Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song. Jay-Z took home the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance, also beating out Eminem ("Beautiful"), Kid Cudi ("Day 'N' Night") and Mos Def ("Casa Boy"). Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West's "Run This Town" was hailed Best Rap Song, triumphing over Drake, Kid Cudi ("Day 'n' Night"), T.I. and Justin Timberlake ("Dead and Gone") and Jay-Z 's solo hit "D.O.A. (Death Of Auto-Tune)."
