It's safe to say that Katy Perry's "California Gurls" is one of the official songs of summer 2010. Featuring the singer's signature tongue-in-cheek lyrics and a cameo by Snoop Dogg, "California Gurls" is the lead single off Katy Perry's forthcoming new album Teenage Dream.
The buoyant track debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart in late May, and Katy Perry donned a blue wig and sparkly Daisy Dukes (with a bikini on top, like the lyrics suggest) to perform "California Gurls" at the recent MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles. Prior to the June 6 awards show, Snoop told Rolling Stone, "Katy Perry is a California girl, the song was about California girls, so why not get the king of California?"
Before the awards show began, MTV offered a sneak peak at Katy Perry's "California Gurls" video. The preview began with Snoop Dogg helping Perry weave her way through her own version of Candy Land-complete with trees made of candy canes, a walkway made of gingerbread and marshmallow clouds overhead. During the clip's dance sequence, Perry wears a variety of candy-colored wigs while dancing with a batch of dancers outfitted in Daisy Dukes and bathing suit cops made of cupcakes.
Speaking about the sugary sweet video to MTV News, Perry said, "We named it 'Candyfornia' instead of 'California,' so it's a different world. It's not just like, 'Oh, let's go to the beach and throw a party and then shoot a music video!' It's more like, 'Let's put us California Gurls in a whole different world.'" A world we're guessing most males wouldn't mind being in!
Despite singing the praises of California, Katy Perry held a listening party for her forthcoming new album in New York on June 14. Perry played songs off Teenage Dream, which will arrive Aug. 24, such as the album's title track (which is rumored to be the second single). Speaking about her lineup of preview parties, Perry told MTV, "It's really exciting to do these little beach party, Katy Perry, Teenage Dream listening parties." Also at the NYC event, Perry debuted the party anthem "Last Friday Night," the breakup track "Circle the Drain," the ballad "Pearl," the dance track "The One That Got Away" and more.
One day after her listening party, Katy Perry invaded Times Square to perform a three-song set on her very own makeshift beach! The show was held in honor of the launch of the 2011 VW Jetta and saw Perry performing two of her biggest hits-"I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot N Cold"-before launching into "California Gurls," all while dressed in a skintight green dress adorned with neon-pink palm trees (and pink stilettos to match).
Katy Perry will be back in the Big Apple to perform in Rockefeller Center as part of NBC's Today Show Summer Concert Series. Perry will perform Aug. 27, and fans are hoping she will announce more dates in the coming months, even if she is busy putting the finishing touches on her album and planning her upcoming nuptials to Russell Brand.
