For the frontman of the self-named alternative rock outfit Daughtry, Chris Daughtry isn't helping to promote the show that got him where he is. The fourth runner-up from American Idol's 2006 season isn't as much of a fan as he used to be, and it isn't just because he's been able to sell over four million albums since losing out to Taylor Hicks.
"I feel like [American Idol] is definitely lacking some credibility at this point," Daughtry admitted to Rolling Stone in 2008. "It's in a state of decline and if they don't do something about it, it's probably not gonna last too much longer." Though the reality show that helped launch his musical career might not be around much longer, his spring itinerary shows that he will be. The group, in support of the sophomore set Leave This Town, heads out mid-March for its second arena tour to date. Though he admits American Idol mania has worn off, headlining gig after gig across the country is still just as exciting to Daughtry as it was the first time. "Growing up, you dream about singing one of your songs in front of a packed house," he admitted on his website. "I still get chills when we're playing and I hear the crowd singing louder than we are." Currently supporting the summer release in Europe, the group returns in March for their second stateside jaunt.
Led on vocals by Chris Daughtry, the group Daughtry was formed following his Idol run in 2006 and after scoring a recording contract with RCA Records. Formed by way of the North Carolina native, the frontman was a longtime recording artist before finally making it in the big time, performing in local bands around his Greensboro area as a teen and even trying out for the show Rock Star: INXS. Though he didn't make the cut for the rock show, which was a disappointment for the Absent Element vocalist, he tried his hand at American Idol and made it through the auditions.
While vying for a spot in the Top 10, Daughtry's pretty-boy rocker looks earned him the attention of Fuel, who was in need of a new lead singer. Though the opportunity looked promising while still high on his Idol fame, Daughtry's dream of fronting his own band remained the goal and he politely turned down the role.
Eventually Daughtry turned his solo efforts into the self titled project featuring Brian Craddock, Josh Steely, Josh Paul and Joey Barnes. The debut single "It's Not Over" was a Billboard favorite and helped to promote DAUGHTRY; in its first week alone the set sold over 300,000 copies and helped to establish the group's sound. Leave this Town, the group's recent release that has been earning promotion for months, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 charts with nearly 300,000 copies sold. The tunes that appeared from the album include "No Surprise" and "Life after You."
