Few people would have expected Elton John to attend Rush Limbaugh's fourth wedding, including the musician himself. "To put it in Elton's exact words, when he got the invitation he was 'a little surprised'," John's partner David Furnish said to People Magazine. "And then, when it turned out to be a genuinely sincere invitation...Elton said 'life is about building bridges, not walls."
The singer ultimately attended the event with open arms, and in Furnish's words stated it was a wonderful event hosted by the "very welcoming, sweet and very appreciative" couple. John was reportedly given $1 million to perform at the Palm Beach, Fla. wedding of conservative radio host Limbaugh and his bride Kathryn Rogers. Not one to shy away from controversy, John has long been the center of tabloid fodder particularly following his performance in Morocco. The openly homosexual performer protested threats from conservative religious parties that were concerned about his scheduled date at a Rabat, Morocco musical festival in late May. The performance was nearly banned after Morocco's Justice and Development Party brought attention to the issues that John supports and the country's officials oppose. Elton John fans got what they wished for as the Mawzine World Rhythms Festival headliner performed classics to appreciative audiences, reported the Associated Press.
Elton John will keep busy over the next few months, performing throughout the summer with his band before collaborating with Ray Cooper in August. The nonstop tour dates see John visiting major North American and European venues through December 2010, with recently added dates for Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The tour is in support of John's latest disc, Rocket Man, a greatest hits compilation video set that features over two dozen singles and five videos.
John's lengthy career that is captured in 2009's Rocket Man began in 1961. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, John took his name from members of his first band Bluesology - saxophonist Elton Dean and frontman Long John Baldry. After the name change, John and Bernie Taupin became songwriters for Liberty Records. The two conducted music at the time through snail mail until the 1969 debut Empty Sky.
The album was critically accepted but few fans caught on to Elton John's voice though they had been listening to his lyrics for years. John and Taupin paired up with producer Gus Dudgeon for 1970's Elton John, which became popular overseas. "Your Song" was a top hit on the album and allowed John to release several more albums over the span of just a few months.
In 1972 John and his band (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone) released Honky Chateau to great reviews. The singles "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat" were international hits and gave Elton his first American number one. From there it was sheer stardom for John, making him one of the best pop stars of the '70s who maintained staying power like few others. Over the course of four years John and Taupin wrote and recorded over a dozen simultaneous Top 20 hits that enabled John to become one of the biggest stars of the century.
