One of the most popular Italian car manufacturers of all time, Maserati is prominent in both their racing car production and public road manufacturing. Loved by many for their fantastic style, which is aesthetically pleasing to say the least and the overall sheer power that the company's cars can produce, the following are 12 facts compiled about this ever popular Italian car producer.
1. Maserati was founded on 1 December 1914 by five brothers - Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto. Each of the 5 brothers were all involved in the car industry in someway, with Alfieri, Bindo and Ernesto being the most prominent, thanks to their construction of several racing cars for pre-World War II manufacturer Diatto
2. Unfortunately, Alfieri died in 1932 aged 45 due to the after effects of a racing incident four years previously
3. Over the past 96 years, the ownership of Maserati has changed 5 times, first to the Orsi family in 1937, then to Citroen in 1968, De Tomaso in 1975 and then Fiat in 1993. Not a move particularly welcomed by many at Maserati, ownership then went to Ferrari, further to Fiat selling 50% of their company to them
4. The reason why this last move was actually a kick in the teeth for Maserati is because Ferrari has been the company's biggest rivals for many years
5. 8 years after Maserati were took under the umbrella of Ferrari, they broke away and whilst still a part of the larger Fiat Auto group, they are now partnered with Alpha Romeo
6. During the years that the company was owned by the Orsi family, the headquarters were relocated from Bologna to Modena. Whether the Orsis knew it or not at the time is not known, but Modena was actually the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari
7. The 2009 quarter four report from Fiat Auto showed that Maserati had revenue of just over 716 million pounds. Whilst considerable, it is not a great deal when compared to turnover from companies such as Honda, where revenue of 41.69 billion pounds was recorded in 2007. However, it does show the exclusivity of the Maserati brand, something which they are keen to uphold
8. According to statistics Fiat Auto provided in 2007, Maserati employs 695 people
9. The official Maserati website states that there are 16 Maserati dealers within the UK
10. One of the most noticeable aspects about Maserati is its distinctive badge. A simple trident, the reasoning behind the use is that the company was founded in Bologna, Italy and there is a particularly famous landmark in the area known as Fontana del Nettuno. On this fountain, it shows a figure of Neptune, Roman god of the sea, holding his famous trident
11. Maserati currently have five separate models in their line-up, known as the Quattroporte, Quattroporte S, GranTurismo, GranTurismo S and GranCabrio
12. Information provided by Automoblog states that Maserati dealers are expected to have on their showroom floors a convertible GranTurismo in 2010.
