This is one of the main selling points of a Jeep and any of the Jeep dealers will tell you that being able to own one of the worlds only SUVs with a convertible top is a huge plus.
For those people out there who already own a Jeep, you are probably already aware that it is necessary to constantly change the top depending on the different weather conditions that you may encounter. As the seasons change, the temperature changes and depending on how drastic it is, you may need to change the top on your Jeep regularly.
During the warmer months, most Jeep owners prefer the use of Jeep soft tops. This type of top usually needs care and maintenance to ensure that it keeps on being functional despite years of use. However, it is still recommended to replace it every few years, but you can still carry out various things to increase the life span of your Jeeps soft top.
First, you need to clean the top whenever you notice an accumulation of dirt on the surface or any of the vinyl windows. Be sure to clear away by hand any pebbles, small stones or other small and sharp objects that may have gotten stuck to your Jeep top to prevent it from tearing through the material.
When washing, it is highly recommended that you use warm water. Dab just a little bit of mild liquid detergent or dishwasher soap on a soft terry cloth when washing the top or its windows. Remember, too much soap may leave streaks, especially on the windows, and prolonged exposure to harsh soaps can damage the roof material. Also, it is important that before using it, leave it to dry, preferably outside.
After you have cleaned your Jeep top, make sure that you apply a protectant of some form. There are all kinds of protectants available, with recommended ones being sold at all Jeep dealers (they will also be able to tell you which brand is best for your individual Jeep).
Once you have chosen your protectant, you should apply it on your tops cover and windows every month, after cleaning them on the same time basis. The proper protectant, if used regularly, will shield your vinyl windows from UV rays that may cause yellowing and protect your soft top from discoloration and water damage.
When the winter comes and you choose to switch to a hard top (if possible), be sure to store the soft top appropriately. It should be stored in a dry area and not allowed to accumulate excess moisture. Cover the vinyl windows with a terry cloth towel and then roll them up so that the vinyl does not touch itself, otherwise it will stretch. Finally, do not fold any portion of your Jeep top, as prolonged storage in that position will cause creasing and wrinkling and may cause your top to lose its shape.
Owning a soft top Jeep offers a range of driving possibilities, but it is important that you know exactly how to take care of it properly to ensure it is can be used for as long as possible.
