The Green Car Website recently produced a list of the top ten most economical cars available within the UK. As would be expected, no car on the list has an engine bigger than 1.6 litre and all of them can be considered to be small cars, something which once again would be taken as a given by most who were to compile a similar list themselves.

Taking a look at the list in a little more detail, these cars are considered to be the most economical in the United Kingdom.

1 - 5. The first, second and third places in the list are all taken up by, not surprisingly, the Smart ForTwo.

According to the report, the Smart ForTwo Coupe CDI Pure, Coupe CDI Passion, Coupe CDI Passion with the luxury pack, Cabrio CDI Passion and Cabrio CDI Passion with the luxury park, (the semi-automatic versions) all return an average 85.6 miles for every gallon of petrol that you put into it.

For the average car driver, 85.6 miles per gallon is a figure that dreams are made of, as compared to the popular Vauxhall Corsa with a 1 litre engine, data provided by the What MPG website explains that the combined MPG is 50.4. Respectable as it is, it is not far off being only half of what the Smart ForTwo's offer.

6 and 7. The heavily advertised Seat Ibiza 1.4 TDI Ecomotive 3 and 5 door varieties make up places 6 and 7. Returning an average 76.3 miles per gallon, the Seat Ibiza's are not only a particularly popular car, but one of the most economical currently on the market.

8 and 9. Ford's have for decades been seen as one of the most reliable types of car to buy. Relatively cheap to buy, cheap to maintain and cheap to fix, Ford have now developed a car that is also cheap to run.

The Ford Fiesta Econetic range, in particular the 1.6 TDCi version, has a relatively strong 1.6 engine, but can still return a MPG ratio of around 76.3, with eight and ninth place being taken up by the 3 and 5 door varieties.

10. The final car on this list is the 5 door, 1.4 litre VW Polo Bluemotion 1 (with the TDi 80 trim) and is by far VW's most economical car to date.

With an MPG ratio of 74.3, it only drops 2 miles from every gallon of petrol compared to the Ford Fiesta Econetic and with a 1.4 litre engine, packs a big enough engine to be able to cope easily with journeys other than those around town.

If you're looking to buy one of the most economical cars on the market, your best choice, according to this list, is by far to head to Smart dealers and purchase almost any variation of the ForTwo. These cars were designed with economical fuel consumption in mind and this ensures that you won't be disappointed if you go to any of the Smart dealers and purchase a model today.
