As one of the most illustrious, well-known and much adored car manufacturers in the world, BMW have developed a range of outstanding cars and motorbikes (as well as various other vehicles) since they first began manufacturing them several decades ago.

Whilst the company is massively popular, these 7 pieces of information are all facts about BMW that you probably didn't know.

1. They were founded in 1916 by Franz Josef Popp and were originally a manufacturer of aeroplane engines. When the Treaty of Versailles came into force on 10 January 1920, however, the company had to stop this type of production and switched their focus to motorbike manufacturing, developing their first motorbikes in 1923 and then their first cars in 1928.

2. The BMW logo is one of the most iconic and well known of any car manufacturer, but most do not actually know what it means.

The emblem consists of a circle, split into four sections, two opposites of which are blue and the other two opposites being white, with the BMW name printed over the top.

The sectioned circle is a representation of an aeroplane propeller cutting through the sky, whilst the two colours are taken from the Bavarian flag (the English translation of the full BMW acronym is Bavarian Motor Works).

3. According to the official annual reports produced by the company, BMW dealers have maintained a figure of over 1,000,000 vehicle sales since 2004. From the year 2000, worldwide sales across all vehicles and models increased continually until 2008, when as would be expected as an effect of the global economic recession, sales fell slightly, although still remaining well above the 1,000,000 mark.

4. BMWs presence in the Formula 1 racing world has been particularly apparent since 2006 and most will be aware that they are a successful team. However, it is not widely known just how involved they are in Formula 1, as aside from entering their own team, they also supply engines to a range of other competitors, including Williams and Benetton.

5. The company have seen resounding success over the years in racing with their sports cars, taking victories in Le Mans 24, Nurburgring and 24 Hours of Daytona.

6. Considering that BMW have a history of developing powerhouses of cars, they actually offer some of the most environmentally friendly petrol cars that you can buy.

As a member of the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Achievement Track, they are rewarded for their performance in environmental awareness.

In addition, 20 vehicles that BMW produce have CO2 emissions of less than 140g/km. This puts all of these vehicles in one of the lowest UK vehicle tax groups, meaning that their owners pay, at most, GBP 110 for a full year of vehicle tax.

7. BMW are (and have been) related to several car manufacturers around the world, including Land Rover (whilst now owned by Tata, the modern Range Rover design is from the BMW era), Mini (owned by Rover, BMW took over Rover in 1994 and although they sold the company on in 2000, they retained the Mini brand) and Rolls-Royce (who they have been the parent company for since 2003).
