The human voice is a wonderful and amazing instrument. It communicates need and information, it shares stories of joy and glory, pain and sorrow. The voice is the string that connects us to each other, necessary to tying together our families, communities, and human civilization itself. When the human voice sings, it touches us like nothing else, reaching inside of us, capturing our emotions. The singing voice has been revered and elevated since the earliest days of history for its sweetness and beauty.

Singing isn't just something to be performed for the enjoyment of others. Singing is a healthy, enjoyable release as any shower superstar will attest. It feels good, not just for the emotional and energy release but because it fills the lungs with air, requiring a rejuvenating, oxygenating deep breathing that many don't do enough of otherwise. It exercises muscles in the abdomen and strengthens the diaphragm. Singing simply for one's own joy is a healthy reward all by itself.

Singing lessons at any age can be a wonderfully rewarding experience. It's never too late to learn how to improve the human instrument of the voice to enhance the joy of singing and the health rewards it includes. One doesn't have to be a solo vocalist to enjoy singing for an audience. There are many chorus opportunities from church choirs to community musical theater choruses. There are barbershop choruses in many cities for both men and women that are great fun and offer social opportunities.

Voice lessons for kids offer much greater benefits than grooming a child for potential stardom. It builds self-confidence and self-esteem, helping children express themselves in a full, confident voice that will benefit them for a lifetime. The shy children who fear speaking up and being heard, hiding within their small, isolated shells, learn what it feels like to open their lungs to create a full-bodied beautiful sound that is encouraged and rewarded by the voice teacher. This individualized attention and encouragement help a child expand their social skills with greater confidence to get involved with school and community musical activities.

One of the greatest fears of most people is public speaking, yet it is a skill with great professional and personal rewards. Singing lessons go far to help eliminate or control this fear, beginning with singing for the voice teacher, then expanding to singing for an audience. Most voice teachers hold small concerts periodically with their students to perform for families and friends in a safe, fun environment. Once a student gets past the fear of singing for an audience, speaking is a piece of cake.

If you love to sing, even if it's just in the car or shower, who knows? You might be the next Susan Boyle. Or, it could be the beginning of a new musical hobby in your community filled with fun and new friendships with others who share your joy. Voice lessons may be the key to gaining the confidence you need to get out there and sing!
