Your Horizontal Shape Determines How To Dress

No matter what outfit or style you choose for the day, one of the most important steps to looking your best is to dress for your specific body type. All women's bodies are different and clothes fit women differently. Finding out what type of body you have and how to dress for your body will help you look better and feel better every day.

First evaluate your body type to determine what shape your body is, specifically your horizontal body type. Your horizontal body type is the relationship between your chest, waist and hip line. The size of these parts of your body isn't as important as the relationship and proportion to each other.

To determine the proportion of these three body parts to each other stand in front of a full-length mirror. Use a straight object and place it under your armpit and rest it on your hip. Using the straight object you will be able to see if your bust line is narrower, wider or the same width as your hip line.

If your bust line and hip line are the same width and your waist in between the two is well defined then you have an hourglass figure. When dressing for an hourglass figure, you want to emphasize your curves, especially your waist. You should wear dresses and shirts that have defined waistlines or shirts that are fitted or semi-fitted. It is also good to wear straight or gently flared pants.

If you have a larger bust or broad shoulders with a smaller waist line you have an inverted triangle shape. To dress for this shape, you want to create a balance of your upper body to your lower body and create the illusion of an hourglass shape. Wear clothing that draws attention away from your upper body. Find a-line skirts or flared pants. Tops and dresses that flow through the waist and away from your body starting at the waist are a good idea as well.

If your hip line is wider than your bust line and shoulders then you have a triangle or pear shaped body. Just like the inverted triangle shape, you will want to dress to create an illusion of balance between your upper and lower body. For a pear shaped body you want to draw attention to your upper body. You can do this by wearing jewelry or accessories on your upper body. Look for skirts and pants that are straight or only slightly flared. Shoulder pads are also a good idea to create balance, but make sure that you can't see them.

Every woman's body is different and although your body may not fall into one of these three specific categories, just remember that the goal to dressing for your body type is to create balance and try to make it look like your have an hourglass figure.
