How To Give Yourself A Seasonal Makeover

As the seasons change, we always hear about what is new and hot for today. There are unspoken rules about what colors you should or should not wear after such-and-such a day. I for one have never been too concerned with clothing--I prefer to stay comfortable and set my own trends.

But on the other hand, I do concentrate on my hair and makeup. I like to make sure that when people see those features, they can tell that I am fresh-faced and fashionable. But few women actually take into account the season when they update their look.

If you want to give yourself a season-appropriate makeover, allow me to share some of my best advice with you. It's simpler than you might think!

We are now smack-dab in the middle of summer, so it's time to opt for a sunny overall look. You don't have to visit a tanning bed or slather on self-tanner to achieve a glowing look.

You may want to lightly dust a bronzing powder on your cheeks in place of blush. If you are inclined to use eye shadow, use a shimmering shade in bronze or gold, but don't overdo it. You want your eyes to stand out, but not because they look like they're on fire--or worse, just plain tacky.

Lighten up your eyes by changing the color of your eyeliner to grey or brown, and switch to a lighter mascara and brow powder or pencil. You can still make your eyes stand out but with a different style.

Many women tend to dye their whole head of hair based upon the time of year, but it takes forever for your hair to grow out, and it can be very damaging to keep re-dyeing to keep it looking fresh. So for summer, go for highlights in blonde or caramel to lighten up your look while avoiding the maintenance of whole-head permanent dye.

When winter rolls around, convert your medium or shorter-length 'do with extensions. It's a hassle to grow out and continually manage long hair, so if you want it right away without the other issues, visit your favorite salon to discuss your options.

Winter is a great chance to use rich colors in your makeup. Switch to eyeliner in deep hues such as navy blue and royal purple. Depending on your attire, you might also experiment with colors like forest green and crimson red.

In your makeup, take turns emphasizing features on your face. Add a few swipes of dark blush underneath your cheekbones and then dramatize the look of your lips with a deep-colored lip stain or lipstick. Then, on other days, play up your eyes with a dark brown or black mascara.

I can only cover tips for these two seasons, but let them fire up your imagination for the rest of the year.
