Were you delighted by clowns as a child, vowing to one day becoming a clown yourself? Are you a person who loves being the life of the party, bringing laughter and joy to everyone around you? Do you love kids, making them laugh with your silly antics and games? If any or all of these descriptions fit your personality, then you have the makings of a professional clown.

Becoming a professional clown requires more than funny clothes and make-up. Though those are part of a clown's costume, the costume isn't even the beginning and certainly isn't the end. Clowning is a serious business that requires considerable education and an investment of time and money. Many professional clowns begin by attending one of the fine clown schools around the country. There also books, conferences, and work-shops offered that will teach clown skills such as face painting, balloon sculptures, magic tricks, or juggling that can become a part of your act. Check out local clubs where you can find a wealth of information and mentoring.

You need to define your clown character and develop it along with the tools of your act. What kind of clown do you want to be? Do you want to your clown persona be Slap Happy Joe or Grumpy Grannie? Are you interested in telling stories or doing physical schtick? Once you've defined your persona, you need to decide on your make-up to tell that story and enhance the personality. Be unique and have fun with it. Get to know your clown as an individual with layers, colors, and depth.

After you have defined your clown character and practiced your skills and act, it's time to try it out on an audience. Maybe start with some neighborhood kids, inviting them and their parents for a lemonade yard party where you can try out your act and see their reactions. Are they delighted or bored? Are they laughing or running terrified to mommy? This will help you develop more of what worked well, discarding the bits that didn't have the best results.

One of the best ways to build a clown business is to donate your time at hospitals, schools, and libraries. Every show you do will help you to refine your act and your clown character, becoming more skilled, comfortable, and professional. Have cards or flyers with you to hand out. You never know where a paying gig will come from. The more visible you are, the more in demand you will be.

The life of a clown can be hard, demanding work. It is also the most rewarding, spreading joy and laughter in a world that surely needs both.
