There are many ways to get injured. It could be at home or at work. You could be playing your favorite sport, or just cleaning up the house. There isn't a way to completely eliminate every risk and opportunity to get hurt. Some of these forces are out of your control and you can't do anything to make yourself safer. But there are a few things that are in your control and can help to keep you and your family safer. The following are a couple of ways to make your home a less risky environment.

One of the most important things to do is make sure that your smoke detectors are functioning properly. They will alert you when something is on fire that shouldn't be. But they will only do that if you have checked to make sure they are working and that the batteries are working. If you are lucky the smoke alarms will never be needed, but you definitely don't want to be caught with alarms that aren't functioning properly. Fifteen minutes checking and replacing batteries could save you are your families life.

Another thing that you can do to the inside of your house is to make sure the electrical wiring is done correctly. If you are building a new house, make sure a licensed professional does it. If you are buying an existing home, get it inspected first before signing the final papers. This also isn't a home project that you should try and attempt yourself. If you have lights flickering, sparks flying, or a wire exposed, call a professional and get it done safely can correctly.

On the outside of your house, you can make sure that you remove snow as soon as possible. If it isn't shoveled right away, you will be left with a sidewalk and driveway full of slippery ice and snow. It will help to protect you and others that are using the sidewalks around your house. If you don't get it cleared right away and you have ice, you can use some salt to help melt and break up the ice.

One other thing you can do if you have a lot of snow and ice is install anti slip strips on your stairs. If you can get things shoveled, this could be the next best thing. There are plenty of different types that can be installed on any surface or type of stairs.
