Finding Spiritual Peace As You Age

I remember when I was in elementary school, a favorite teacher--who was approaching her 60th birthday--said that aging seemed to have snuck up on her. She indicated to us--her eleven and twelve-year-old students--that aging was not a dramatic process. "One day, I woke up," she said, "and I was old."

This revelation is probably true for many aging people, but for others, the debilitating effects of health troubles, chronic pain, and stress make the process of getting older more pronounced. But no matter how it feels, the realization of old age can be frightening. That is why it is so important to nurture your spiritual self as well as your body.

Though the age of 60 does not seem to be the mark of ancientness it once was, it is still a transitory phase. Retirement may seem like a relief and a blessing, but it can also be a time to consider your life's meaning as you reflect upon the close of your career and what to do with your newfound spare time.

So many people find themselves at the end of their career feeling remorse for the path they have taken. Many people get stuck in mundane jobs just so they can pay the bills, but now is your chance to find fulfillment.

Find something that is simplistic but gives your life more meaning. Find hobbies that allow you to contribute and give back to your community and society as a whole. There are numerous ways to do this, but if you aren't sure where to start, you could even take a class in a craft or trade that you want to try.

If you are a member of a church, synagogue, mosque, or some other community of worship, ask leaders of the congregation how you can get involved and help others.

If you are homebound by a medical problem, don't let that stop you. You can still make meals for those in need and have others deliver them. You can participate in crafts at home--such as tying off quilts for the poor or those struck by disaster. You can make phone calls or send e-mail.

If you are feeling spiritually uncertain, particularly if you are physically ailing, see a counselor who will offer you sessions that are faith-based. While seeing a priest or rabbi or other spiritual leader is also helpful, it is beneficial to see a professional.

If you are preparing to move on to a new residence, make contacts in your new religious organization right away. They can help you feel at home right away, which can be crucial in this transition. When it comes to finding a new home, there are even retirement communities that are faith-based. They can administer to your spiritual needs right where you are.

You may not have a history of participating in religious or spiritual activities, but this is a good time to start, as it can bring you peace as you age.
