Louisville, Ky. has always been known primarily as a racing town, but once a year the Churchill Downs Racetrack gets taken over by a host of the greatest musical performers in the country. The Hullabalou music festival stretches out over three whole days, bringing 65 artists to a collection of five stages. This weekend of music has been popular in the Kentucky area for a long while, but what's important to note is how much of a magnet it's become for music fans on the East Coast and throughout the South. It's a major event, and when it opens July 23 it's sure to draw record numbers of attendees from those geographic regions.

In 2010, the Hullabalou event will feature a preponderance of artists playing country, rock, blues and more. There are some exciting headliners this year, including Bon Jovi, who opens Friday night; Kenny Chesney, who takes the stage Saturday night; and Dave Matthew Band, who closes out the concert on Sunday.

All three of these artists are representatives of the kind of genres you can find at Hullabalou. If you like the classic hair rock of Bon Jovi, after all, you probably will want to see some other classic bands, like Steve Miller Band, the Doobie Brothers or '80s classic pop act Huey Lewis and the News. Enjoy Kenny Chesney's take on country? Seek out Dierks Bentley and up and comer Colbie Caillat on Friday night or Jason Aldean on Saturday. Sunday night both Dwight Yoakam and the Zac Brown Band will be playing, creating a conflict for fans who love both. Which would you rather see jamming on stage?

There are some bands that have slightly more modern takes on pop, including Ben Folds, Gov't Mule, Train and the Black Crowes. It's hard to go wrong with a lineup like this year's. Best of all, you'll be able to watch these bands on a nice, green lawn, taking in the open air and sunshine. Lots of fresh food will be on sale as well, so you and some friends can grab a bite to eat in between performances.

The great thing about festivals like Hullabalou is they pull together a disparate range of bands and give you the chance to see your favorites in one place. You can't really go wrong-there's a decent selection of country as well as some college rock favorites that will remind you of your dorm days. And there are plenty of catchy radio rock acts that are sure to be exciting for older fans that remember these bands in their prime.

Louisville, Ky. may be thought of as racing country, but with the Hullabalou music festival, it has started to redefine itself as a city that enjoys decent music, as well. Consider the massive waves of fans that come out to pack the lawn and enjoy the live bands at this festival each year. You can be there, too, rocking out in front of the stage.
