When you drive up to your home, what do you notice? Is your home as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside? Often we focus on the inside of a home and forget the outside, which results in a cold and unwelcoming exterior. Spring and summer are great times to focus your efforts on home improvement in Maryland on the front yard and welcome area of your home or condo. It's not just real estate agents who talk about curb appeal. Most of us enjoy the way a beautiful home looks.

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about creating curb appeal in your home, apartment, or condo.

Question: I don't like doing gardening or yard work, and it really shows when you drive up to my condo. We have a small front yard area, and mine is all bricked in as a patio. What are some low-maintenance ways to add curb appeal?

Answer: You can plant a large flowering bush or a hedge along the edge of your patio, which would require little maintenance but will add a pleasant edge of green. You can also buy a few hanging planters and hang them from your porch. Hanging planters seldom need anything but water. They aren't likely to get weeds, and they are a beautiful way to bring in some fresh color into your front yard with brightly colored flowering annuals like petunias. You can also invest in some visually pleasing Adirondack chairs or a bench, which will look much more welcoming than a somewhat cluttered patio with nowhere to sit.

Question: I like the idea of doing a little home remodeling in my Virginia home, in the front yard area, and wondered whether adding a travertine patio is a good project to start on.

Answer: Travertine patios are a great project to start on for home improvement in Virginia. The great thing is that they don't need cement or sealant. Before laying the travertine tiles, you will need to clear the area of plants and add about four inches of gravel and then one inch of sand. After smoothing this down, you lay the travertine tiles and set them in the sand by pounding on them with a mallet. Once you're finished pounding the tiles in place, just add an aluminum edge to the patio and you're finished. It's a good project to start with and it really adds some curb appeal.
