Replace Your Furniture On A Budget

My spouse and I have lived in our beautiful little condo for about a year, but unfortunately, we are just now beginning to discard some of our hand-me-down, beat-up furniture and replace it with pieces that reflect our own style and actually match the decor for the rest of the house.

However, because we still don't have enough cash to invest on brand new sofas and 700 dollar recliners as we might like to do, we have had to employ a few tricks to acquire stylish furniture without going into debt. If you are ready to get your home and your furniture looking the way you want it to, let me share some of my best suggestions.

First of all, assess the furniture you mean to discard. Too many people are willing to toss out or donate the things they don't want when, in fact, they could list them in local classifieds and make a decent profit.

Many sites are specially dedicated to furniture classifieds, so search the internet and then check out some of these to find what similar items are going for. Even if you only make ten or fifteen dollars on that dilapidated desk or that weather-beaten couch, that is still money you didn't have before which can now be dedicated to buying new furniture.

Once you have made an effort to sell the things you would otherwise have thrown away, check the classifieds again. Compare gently used items that you see there with furniture you find on websites for local furniture stores. Sometimes you can find excellent deals because people are moving and need to get rid of their bulkier furniture fast.

You can also sometimes find warehouses and furniture stores that advertise in classifieds, particularly when they are trying to closeout certain items that have been sitting in storage or on the showroom floor for too long. So, keep your eyes peeled for ads like these.

Pay attention to your weekly circular. In the past, I had a tendency to throw these away, but then I find myself later irritated because I may have glanced at an ad for a big sale, but then forgot at which store it was located. So frustrating! You should take the time to browse through for items you are in particular need of before tossing the circular in the can.

Don't be afraid to haggle at the furniture store. If you just ask, even managers at national chains may be willing to negotiate a lower price one certain items, even if they are already on sale. So speak up!
