Moving with your dogs or cats can be just as hard on them as it is on you. The familiar routine of their lives is disrupted and pets who aren't used to being in the car can get anxious and car sick. If your move is going to be a success you will need to plan things well out ahead of time.
If your dog or cat is not used to going in the car and you are planning a move that will take a considerable amount of car travel you might want to get them use to being in the car and find out if your pet gets car sick before your in route. Take your dog in the car for small test runs at first, to the grocery store or the bank and see how they act. Most dogs enjoy being in the car and those that don't generally will lay on the floor of the car happy to not see the sights. If your test driving a cat you should put them in a small crate with a blanket or towel and plan on making a lot of small trips until they are less anxious in the car. If your test drives reveal a cat or dog that gets car sick you should take your pet to the vet and see if there is any medication for motion sickness that is safe to give your pet on moving day and plan to make pit stops for fresh air and potty breaks to help their stomachs stay settled. Don't forget to bring a leash, a bowel for water and any medications that your pet will need during the move with you.
If your planned move is going to be long enough to require an over night stop make sure to plan out well ahead of time what motels take pets and let the motel know when you schedule you are traveling with a pet.
If you are going to be driving with your pets you may want to hire a moving company to move your belongings and drive the truck so you can concentrate on your pets needs better. Finding a moving company in your area that can go long distance shouldn't be too hard if you know where to look. This is a valuable time saver to not have to research movers in depth and be able to find a company that has a good reputation in your town.
The hardest part about your move should be keeping your pet from getting car sick or lost, not worrying about your movers.
