Clay tile is a quality roofing material that works well in all climate situations. Clay tile roofs are considered fashionable, come in different colors, and are often used to create or complement homes that have a Southwestern, Italian, or Spanish design, which means they are more prevalent in areas such as California and the Southwestern states of the U.S. And aside from being decorative, clay tile roofs also provide excellent resistance to fire, weather damage, and infiltration from the outside elements, including insects and mold. However, clay tile is very heavy and is one of the most expensive types of roofing materials.
Slate
Slate roofs are just as durable and long lasting as clay tile roofs, if not more so. Slate roofs are completely impervious to weather damage and the outside elements, and rarely does a slate roof ever have to be replaced in a person's lifetime. Although they can be used in all different climates, slate roofs are most beneficial in areas where extreme weather is common. However, the downside of slate roofs is their expense. They commonly cost $1,000 a square and have to be installed by extremely skilled technicians.
Wooden Shingles
Wooden shingles are less expensive than slate or clay tile roofs and are typically made from cedar. Wooden shingles are typically sawn, and wooden roofing materials may also be called "shakes" if they are hand sawn and tapered. Although wooden shingles don't offer the same indestructibility as some of the more expensive roofs made of stone or clay do, they are very resistant to rot, decay, and most outside elements as long as the weather is not too severe.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are also used in many different climate areas, although they are quite vulnerable to wind and ice damage, which makes them not completely ideal for areas of the country that often see harsh winter storms. However, asphalt shingles are one of the most affordable types of roofing materials, which also makes them one of the most popular.
