Ask most people what they first notice about someone else and you'll probably get a lot of people saying that they first notice someone's eyes, or their teeth, or their figure. But for many people, the first thing that's noticeable on another person is their hair! Your hair is an important part of how you look and people can quickly judge you on your hair alone. You could wear a $10,000 dress, but if your hair is an absolutely disaster, no one is going to notice the dress. You could wear a very inexpensive dress, yet the right hair and makeup combination can make you look like your dress is worth $10,000.

Unfortunately there are hundreds of salons out there that promise lots but that do not come through with anything. More than one woman has walked into a new salon hoping for a great new look only to walk out extremely upset because their hair looks horrible. So how do you know how to find the right salon for your needs, especially if there are so many bad ones out there?

Friends

Everyone needs to use a hair salon, so everyone that you know likely has connections to one. Ask your friends and family members what salon they use for their hair and body needs and ask them what they think of the salon. You may find that you have a number of friends who use the same salon, which is a pretty good tip that the salon is fairly good. Before you select one specific salon to go to, make sure that you know someone who has gone to the salon, as this can help you to make sure that the salon is not only a reputable one, but that the stylists who work there are good at their job as well.

Portfolio

Before you go into the salon, make sure that you ask to see their portfolio. The portfolio is a photographic record of the type of work that the stylists do, which can show you what type of work they like to do and which type they're good at. They may only be good at working with short hair, and you may have longer hair, or they may not have much experience with curly hair. The portfolio will help you to sort out, from the beginning, what the salon is good at.

And don't forget to check out the cleanliness of the salon! A salon should definitely be clean and should be well organized. Dirty towels should be put away where they belong, such as in a hamper, and the combs and scissors shouldn't be greasy. The cut hair should all be off of the floor before the next client sits in the chair, and everything should be hygienic. If it's not, then you should definitely look for a different salon to go to, as cleanliness in a salon is extremely important. A little searching and you'll find a salon that you absolutely adore.
