Forming a band can be a very rewarding experience. Once you have completed what members are part of the band and started rehersing, it is a must that you start marketing your band to the general public. Below are some tips on how to get your band on the path of success.
1. Social Networking: One of the best inexpensive things you can do to help your band is to get a Myspace and Facebook account. Both of these free services, will allow you to grow your fan base and get information out to all of them. It is always great to be able to easily tell your fans where you will next be playing at. Myspace is great as it allows you to upload your music. Youtube, is another social network site. Keep a video diary of your band, and upload it on youtube. Also tape your performances and practices. This allows people to see your band and hear the music. With all of the people up on youtube, it is easy to start getting some notice.
2. Fliers: Often start up bands have very little money, but one of the most basic things you can do is make fliers. If you have a performance, try to post it around town. It seems a little old school, but it still works. If there is a college in your town, posing fliers around there is a great place to help add to your fan base. Fliers are easy to make and can be printed on most standard home ink jet printers.
3. Guitar Picks: Instead of business cards or calling cards, use custom imprinted guitar picks instead. People usually just can't bear to part with a nicely designed guitar pick. Plus you can also throw them out to fans during performances. Audiences love getting free stuff at concerts, even if it is as simple as a guitar pick. 6. Promo Kits: Make a nice promo kit. These are necessary for any serious band. Venues often will ask for this when considering you. A promo kit should include the following items:
* A cover page introducing your band with a short description.
* A bio that details every member of the band.
* A 8x10 color photo of your band.
* Demo CD.
* Your contact information.
* Letters of recommendations from other venues or fans.
Also send these kits out to manufactures that make music related products. Often these manufacturers will endorse your band, and will give you press and discounts off of their products.
7. Banners: Get a vinyl banner printed with your band name on it. Make sure the banner is vinyl with grommets in it. This will help make it easier to hang during performances. Also they easily roll up when you are done.
