10 Quick Ways To Instantly Reduce The Cost Of Your Car Insurance

Struggling to find cheap car insurance? These 10 points are all quick ways that should ensure you see an immediate drop in the cost of your premiums.

1. Don't accept your renewal price - accepting your renewal price is the easiest way to get a new year's worth of car insurance, as all you have to do is contact the insurer to confirm you want to go ahead (in some instances, you don't even have to contact them, as the new policy will just start unless you cancel it).

However, due to this convenience factor, the price is almost always higher than it could be.

2. Shop around - although shopping around for car insurance once involved making lengthy phone calls to various different insurers, today it takes a matter of minutes if you use one of the online comparison websites.

If you don't have access to the internet, as a general rule of thumb, you should be comparing at least 3 or 4 different insurers.

3. Buy a cheap, older car - generally speaking, the older your car is, the cheaper your insurance is going to be, as it will be easier to repair or replace should something go wrong.

Remember, though, that you want to be staying on the younger side of the 25 year old mark. If you're after an Audi, for example, head to new or second hand Audi dealers and purchase any model that was built after 1985.

You may find some Audi dealers selling older models, but as these will almost always be considered classics, your insurance premiums will increased substantially.

4. Keep it secure when at home - if you have an alarmed garage, use it. If you've got a securely locked shed, use it. Whatever you do, don't just leave your car in an unsecured area, such as on a public road, as insurers frown upon this massively.

5. and when away - invest in a high quality steering wheel lock to reduce the risk of your car being stolen when it's not at home. For added bonus points, choose a lock (or other security device) that is recommended by the insurer.

6. Don't drive to work and back - car insurance premiums will generally increase if you drive between the peak hours of approximately 7.30am to 9.30am and 4.30pm and 6.30pm. Therefore, if you can not use your car during these times, you should see a reduction in your premiums.

7. Lower your annual mileage - simply put, the more miles you cover each year, the greater chance there is of you being involved in an accident. Therefore, if you can lower your mileage by taking out any unnecessary journeys, your premiums should fall.

8. Use cash back websites - although using cash back websites won't actually lower the cost of your premium, the money you receive through them will allow you to reimburse your funds.

For example, if your premium was 350 pounds and you purchased it by going through a cash back website first, you might receive 10% back into your cash back account, meaning that should you put this 10% back into your own bank account, your insurance would in effect only cost 315 pounds.

9. Consider the different levels of cover - if you have always chosen Fully Comprehensive insurance because of the amount of cover that it provides, consider a lower level.

Fully Comprehensive does cover almost any eventuality, but you usually pay a higher amount than for Third Party or Third Party, Fire and Theft.

10. Pay all at once - although temptation may arise to pay your premium over 12 months, you'll pay an additional fee on top for this privilege, just like an interest charge on a bank loan. Therefore, if you can, pay the whole amount in one go.
