In a country where civilian demonstrations happen once in a while, police officers or the anti-riot team are often seen spraying something on the demonstrators to disperse them on the site. One of this materials used to disperse a demonstration is a Pepper Spray. It is also called as OC gas, OC spray, and capsicum spray. Pepper spray is a tear gas which irritates the eyes to cause pain, tears, and even momentary blindness. It is used worldwide for crowd control, riot control, self-defense which includes against bears and dogs. Pepper sprays are commonly available in canisters, which are small enough to be carried or kept in a pocket. Anti-demonstrators use pepper spray projectile which can be loaded in a paintball gun. This is to avoid hitting other police officers that usually happen when they use pepper spray canisters.

Pepper spray causes your respiratory tract to be inflamed resulting to difficulty of breathing, runny nose and coughing, and it also affects your eyes. The strength of the spray influences the duration of pepper spray effects. The effect will peak around thirty to fifty minutes and will wear off on the next hour. A study has shown that a single exposure of pepper spray to the eye is harmless but prolonged and repeated exposure may lead to corneal damage and eventually to blindness. It is fatal to those asthmatic people.

There is a first aid when you are sprayed with it. Do not touch the area being contaminated with the pepper spray. Blink vigorously, the more natural tear much better as this will dilute the capsaicin oil. Have a liquid antacid that contains aluminum hydroxide such as Maalox, and water. Mix the antacid and water with same proportion. Lean backwards, tilt your head and pour enough amounts to the eye. Blink several times to allow the solution to get into. Rinse the other affected parts with soap, petroleum jelly, or vegetable oil. Just choose among these solutions to neutralize the spray. Also wash your clothes immediately. Administer saline drops the next day to make sure your eye is lubricated.

Legalities on using pepper spray vary from state to state. In the United States, residents are allowed to bring it and even on their workplace. Most countries in Asia and even in Europe have restricted the use of this spray by private citizens and only police forces are allowed to possess it though there are some countries that have less restriction.

Before purchasing a pepper spray, you must put into consideration your state law. If it is allowed, you can purchase this item in hardware store, gun shops, and even on groceries. It will be an advantage if you have it with you especially in times that you sense trouble or bad guys roaming around.
