Tips For Preserving Fine Children's Clothing

For most parents, dressing a child represents one of the greatest joys of parenting. Today's fashions are so much more original and stylish than their predecessors and because there are tons of different online children's boutiques to choose from, there's something out there to suit everyone's tastes. Buying fine children's clothing represents a little bit of an investment, so you want to be sure to take every means to preserve them for as long as possible. Here are some tips.

--Read the labels! This may seem like a no-brainer, but many parents actually fall in love with the look of the clothes and buy them without bothering to check how they should be cared for. If a garment requires dry cleaning, make sure to follow instructions and don't try to "get away" with washing it. You're sure to be sorry later.

--Use the right kind of detergent. If clothing is machine washable, make sure to wash your children's fine clothing in extremely mild detergent and in soft water. Hard water and harsh detergents will fade that darling little sun dress or sailor suit faster than your child can outgrow it.

--Sort your laundry carefully. You don't want to wash an expensive little pair of jeans with a pastel top, for example, nor do you want to put a red shirt in with a white cotton dress! Again, it's all common sense stuff: you're careful with sorting your own laundry, and you should apply the same principles to your child's fine clothing.

--Air dry. The tumble and heat of a dryer will wear out those adorable outfits much faster than air drying. There is also a considerable risk of shrinkage if the dryer is set too high. Fine clothing is worth a little extra trouble, even if it means using an iron later.

--Attack stains right away. Kids will be kids, and there is bound to be the inevitable spilled ice cream cone or cranberry juice from time to time. Don't give stains time to set up: use a clean cloth soaked in cold water or club soda to get the worst out immediately. Then wash as usual or take the garment to the dry cleaner. There are many spot stain remover treatments on the market, but you need to be wary of these as they can remove color or damage delicate fabrics. A good rule of thumb is: the more "natural" the stain treatment, the better.

Buying fine clothes from a children's boutique is a special treat: by following common sense principles in caring for them you'll get more wear from them and may even be able to pass them on for generations to come.
