Slab leaks have the possibility for developing into a serious situation if the homeowner is unaware of their existence. These are serious situations that everyone should be aware of how to deal with. Many homeowners are not even aware of what slab leaks are. Basically, slab leaks are pipes that have sprung a leak that are located inside or underneath the concrete foundation or floor of a house. Although these are under concrete, there are ways to detect them.

Now that the definition of a slab leak has been given, it's time to discuss how to detect it. There are several signs one can look for if they are concerned about slab leaks. The first is to look for spots or stains on the flooring or carpeting of a house. This could include wet, damp or moist areas. These will appear as if from nowhere because they will be coming from below instead of above where most carpet stains originate from.

Another sign of a slab leak is when water comes through the foundation. This is of course not normal and would definitely raise concern to any homeowner. It is especially troublesome when a homeowner sees that there is no water coming in from the outside. This means that the flooding is coming from below.

A sudden settling of the foundation is yet another clue of a slab leak. This can cause the concrete to actually crack and shift. Issues regarding foundation settling after a home has been built could have serious repercussions in the long haul. Houses have sustained serious damage whenever the foundation cracks, shifts or settles after a home has been built.

Low water pressure is yet another more subtle way to know something may be amiss. Typically, when there is low water pressure, there is a reason for it. What is unfortunate is when this reason goes unrealized until it is too late. Whenever there is low water pressure in the home, it is a good idea to investigate the cause just in case it may have to do with a slab leak.

Something else that could tip off an issue with a leak underneath the concrete or foundation is an increase in the water bill. When there is a leak that means that the water is constantly running. This, of course, would lead to a very noticeable increase in the water bill as water will be continually running at all times. Excess water on any property is never a good thing. This could potentially damage the home underneath where the leak began as well as neighboring homes. That is why it is so important to be aware of slab leaks and how to detect them.
