There is nothing wrong with being clean, showering, a little personal hygiene and so forth but the obsession with sanitizer kind of reaching epidemic proportions. Of course, that being said tongue in cheek we have become sort of paranoid about germs. When I was a kid we showered about 2x a week, we swam, played and generally hit water a couple of times a week, even if it was an irrigation ditch. But todays mothers are boiling bottles and pacifiers, squirting their kids down with anti-bacterial soaps, lotions, sprays, gels, mists so often I don't even know how the healthy bacteria have a chance to grow. Do the mothers of today know that there are vitally healthy bacteria essential for normal health? I doubt it.

I have a son who at age three, learned that behind every cash register was a garbage and often in that garbage was a delicious piece of chewed gum. He also learned that gum was stored under desks, under tables and in a variety of places only a three year old could find. Inevitably, when I was writing my check, swiping my card, he would have a victorious look of his face and I knew he had found gum. The thought turned my stomach. I couldn't figure out how he didn't just turn over in his sleep and die from all the germs he was exposed to.

Time went on, this child ingested more germs than all my other kids put together. He was healthy, never got sick. I don't think the germs had time to catch up to him. He didn't miss one day of elementary school for being sick the first three years he attended. He is now in tenth grade and I could count all the days on one hand he has missed since kindergarden. Now, I don't propose to have kids go around chewing other peoples gum, but I can tell you that he has an incredible immune system. He never gets sick. I have friends who are germaholics and there kids are always sick. Somewhere in there is a happy medium.

Now there are exceptions to my not wanting to be a germaphobic and one of those places is the gym. I don't want toenail fungus, I don't want to lay on a sweaty yoga mat and I don't want pilate balls dripping with the previous users sweat. I love that fact that our gym has sanitary wipes for use after exerciser machines. Finish with the treadmill, grab a gym wipe and give her a wipe down. Finish the yoga mat, use a sanitary wipe. Lovely, everyone is happy.

The country is a little obsessive about cleanliness right now, but that doesn't mean we all have to be lathered with sanitizer every time we turn around.
