Rapper Jay-Z believes that some things should change while others should remain the same. That latter belief was vocalized by "the Hov" in response to the "We Are the World" remake. Jay-Z was quoted in MTV News as saying, "I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: 'We Are the World,' I love it, and I understand the point and it's great. But I think 'We Are the World' is like 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever want to see it touched."
Perhaps that is why in such a star-studded lineup, Jay-Z's voice was missing from the pack. The rapper went on in his interview to suggest that recording an entirely new ballad for the Haiti relief efforts might have been the better decision. Yet fans will remember that Jay-Z joined the recent Haiti relief telethon alongside Bono, the Edge and Rihanna, the four of whom collaborated on "Stranded," an original tune, penned specifically for charity efforts. Jay-Z was really dishing to MTV as he also gave a small hint in regards to the content of his forthcoming album. He used the words "most experimental" when describing the effort, but gave no inclination of when it might hit the shelves. He added to the intense speculation by saying, "I got one crazy record." Just how bizarre is this LP going to be? That's something that the Jigga-man wants to keep mum about...at least for now. Meanwhile, fans are going to have to satisfy their Jay-Z taste buds with the new chart-topping single featuring Alicia Keys.
From a young age, Jay-Z had dreams of becoming a musician. He grew up surrounded by crime in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn and was soon influenced by local gangs, prompting him to turn to the rough life of the streets in order to make his way in the world. A hustler's life was simply not in the cards for Jay-Z; he took it upon himself to start his own record label, a signal of his abilities as an entrepreneur, and released a debut album shortly afterward.
While Jay-Z did not enjoy sudden success from his first album, Reasonable Doubt, he was well on his way to fame by the time he released a follow-up effort in 1997. In My Lifetime, Vol 1 marked the start of Jay-Z's reign as rap king. It shot to the top of the Billboard chart and established Jay-Z as an emerging star.
The rest of the 1990s and 2000s saw Jay-Z blow away his competition on the charts; albums like Vol 3: Life and Times of S. Carter, The Blueprint and The Blueprint 2 took the rap world by storm. Yet just when he was on top of the world, he announced his retirement with the release of The Black Album. Jay-Z just couldn't seem to get used to the simple life, however, and before long the kid from the projects was back in the game with American Gangster, and most recently The Blueprint 3.
