The department of transportation has many important responsibilities that they accept in order to help keep the highways safer for everyone that travels them. Many of the programs and regulations that the D.O.T. has put in place apply to the drivers that work for your local courier service. That is because a driver for a courier service is a professional driver, and these people in particular are under scrutiny by the D.O.T.

The reason for this scrutiny is that people who are on the road all day every day pose a much greater potential for accidents. This isn't due to their lack of ability. On the contrary, professional drivers have much more experience and are in general safer drivers than regular commuters. However, long hours can lead to fatigue, which can lead to accidents. In addition, because of the long hours they spend on the road, they also are exposed to more potential accidents, accidents which certain defensive driving skills could help them avoid.

This is why the D.O.T. has a driver training program that professional drivers are required to participate in regularly. It services a number of different functions, but in the end, the result is simply to make these drivers safer on the road. It teaches them the skills necessary to ensure that potential accident situations that they may be exposed to do not result in actual accidents whenever possible.

These programs help to both keep the roads safer, and to keep shipping costs down. When couriers are in fewer accidents, this means that their customers are going to be making less insurance claims. When the general insurance rates that are placed on courier goods are kept down, this equals direct savings for the customer.

There are many accidents on American roads and highways every day, many of them involving professional drivers. The D.O.T. Training programs help to reduce these numbers dramatically. In addition to these programs, they also have a health screening initiative which they use to keep people off the roads who are unfit for prolonged driving. If people drive for long periods of time with certain health conditions or predispositions, they could cause an accident. This might include things like very severe asthma, untreated epilepsy, or a propensity towards heart problems. This health screening combines with the training program to form a very effective one two combination on behalf of the D.O.T., which is designed to help keep the roads safe.
