Try Something Different Tonight

Everyone has their favorite kind of food. Everyone gets cravings. There are definitely days when I know I won't be satisfied until I have a healthy serving of sushi in front of me or a giant burrito from an authentic Mexican restaurant around the corner.

But unfortunately, too many of us get so contented with our favorites that we don't realize there could be numerous other favorites out there, just waiting to be sampled. We stick to Chinese takeout; Mexican; sushi; steak and potatoes, and hamburgers. Try something different tonight.

Experimenting with different kinds of ethnic food is one of the best (and most delicious!) ways to learn about other cultures. If you feel a little nervous about branching out, then just find a restaurant that specializes in food from a country neighboring one whose food you know you love.

For example, if you are a Chinese food fanatic, then give your business to a local restaurant specializing in Thai or Korean food. Some menu items overlap, allowing you to fall back on "your usual" in case nothing new tempts your palate.

Before your next outing, take the time to educate yourself about some types of food you have heard about or that you think you may want to try. Match up what you learn with your personal tastes.

Do you have a weakness for hot, spicy dishes? Switch from Latin-inspired cuisine to Indian or Ethiopian food. Not only will this expose you to the favorite flavors of another group of people, it will also help you learn about yourself and more of what you like.

A meat eater's dream is, shockingly, not to be culminated in a giant hamburger. It can, in fact, be found inside a Brazilian barbeque, known in Portuguese as "churrasco." Most Brazilian grills offer a buffet stuffed with a variety of foods while they bring around skewers of meat and grilled vegetables, which they cut and serve to you at your behest.

If you don't have that many options in the area where you live, then you may even want to make a culinary expedition to the nearest city. Urban areas naturally attract people from all over, so just by driving a few blocks, you can most likely find a variety of choices.

However, you will probably want to use the internet to find reviews and comments about the restaurants you are considering. After all, one poor experience in a restaurant can turn you off to foreign food forever! And we don't want that.
