How To Safely Climb A Utility Pole

Wood utility poles are made from treated trunks of tall trees. They hold important electrical and communication lines above our heads so that we don't endanger ourselves by coming in contact with them. When there's a problem with the line, a worker must climb the pole to reach it. If you do not have a legitimate reason for climbing the pole, then don't. Even with safety precautions, it is extremely dangerous to climb a utility pole. If you must climb the pole, here are the steps you should take.

To climb a pole, you need the right equipment. Most poles in the United States no longer have the ladder-like steps along the side. Instead, workers use special hooks known as gaffs. These attach to their boots and keep the climber attached to the pole. Sometimes gaffs come with gaff protectors, which must be removed before the pole can be climbed. The other important piece of equipment is the safety belt. The belt encircles the climber's waist as well as the pole. Two safety hooks on the belt allow for adjustments. If you are right handed, carry the safety strap in the left D-ring. Before climbing, the gaffs must be securely tightened and the safety belt tightly fastened. Double-check everything. It's also a good idea to wear leather gloves and a hard hat.

To begin your climb, place a hand on the pole at about the height of your forehead. Bring your heels together. Lift the foot on the same side as the hand. (For example, if your right hand is on the pole, lift your right foot.) The step should only be six to eight inches up. Jab the gaff hook into the pole. As you do this, keep your arms straight and your knees locked so that your toes won't point downward and loosen the gaffs. Keep a thirty-degree angle between your body and the pole; don't hug it. As you ascend the pole, repeat these motions, shifting the safety strap upward as you go. Always have at least three points holding the pole at all times. If an arm is moving, the other arm and both legs should be on the pole. When you're ready to come down, make sure the safety strap is horizontal and simply reverse the movements: drop a locked knee down and stab the pole with the gaff. Wait until you are secure before moving the other leg.
