Simple Touches For Your Dining Room

The dining room was always one of my favorite rooms in the house I grew up in. Though the ceiling was a little on the low side, even for me--a woman of an intimidating 5'4"--I always loved the huge ceiling fan, the long, horizontal window in the far wall, and the antique whitewashed buffets my mother set up in a nook in the corner.

Yet it always seemed to be lacking a certain something. Now that I have my own home with a dining nook, I can't help but think the same thing. But naturally, I don't want to remodel the entire space. I just want to add a few personal touches that make it stand out more. I've been brainstorming, and here's what I've come up with.

You will, of course, want to decide what kind of look you are going for before anything else. If you have canary yellow paint accompanied by medieval-style wall sconces, you might not have a harmonious ambiance in your dining space. That is why it is best to go with neutral colors, such as cream, beige, and taupe in your dining room.

The first thing you need to look at is your lighting. Especially in a space that can be so responsible for nurturing family relationships--after all, meals bring people together--you want to make it a savvy place to hang out. Visit your local hardware store or browse the web to find ideas and eventually pinpoint what you would like. Consider installing dimmers to change up the mood, depending on the occasion.

You should not only select wall sconces to flesh out the light throughout the room--you should also take a good look at the overhead lighting. My family decided to install a ceiling fan with a beautiful light fixture attached because we lived in a hot area, so we needed plenty of ventilation. But you may opt for a chandelier or another fixture with a lot of flair.

Examine the space above and below the table. A rug beneath and a runner on top can make the space look more elegant and eye-catching. Persian rugs in particular create the impression of classic sophistication.

But you will want to opt for finding something that reflects your personal style. When you find a rug that catches your eye, make sure that you take measures to guard it against stains, as they are bound to happen in a dining area!

Don't reserve your table cloth or runner for special occasions. I know that at least for me, it makes me want to have a nice meal with my family when the table always looks nice. If it will make you feel better, purchase a plain, inexpensive runner for everyday use and save your linen tablecloth for holidays and other special gatherings.

These are just a few suggestions to consider. I know that these ideas have given me the motivation to go to my local home improvement store today!
