Coloring your hair at home can be tricky. It seems like the most cost-effective way to change your look, but you need to consider all of the ramifications before purchasing that box color. The ammonia content of most over-the-counter dyes is so damaging that not only will you need a haircut later, you will also need a deep conditioning treatment to revitalize your locks.

After you have washed your hair, avoid blow drying it or using other heat styling methods. Beauty supply stores frequently offer products specifically formulated to strip the color from your hair, but they leave your tresses a yellow-orange color, which can be embarrassing to be seen with.
The color stripping is meant to allow your hair to safely be re-dyed, but after one botched job, you may not be up for trying again. Instead, make it a point to call a stylist right away or search the internet for salons in your area that specialize in color correction. It is best to do this without doing the color stripping on your own.
Keep in mind that you only have about three days to properly correct the color mistake. Even if you dye your hair over a weekend, that should still provide you with plenty of time to get an appointment, and there are still many quality salons that accept walk-ins without a problem.
