Hot tubs are a gathering place for friends and family, as well as a handy place to shoo house guests into when they're getting underfoot. Clean, relaxing, and even romantic with the right mix of occupants, they've long been touted as a draw for entertaining and a particularly pleasant form of therapy for those with sore muscles. Much like pools, however, the use of a spa is often a spur-of-the-moment activity, with impromptu swimsuits (or lack thereof) abounding and a general lack of items to dry off with. Naturally, the host will usually offer his or her own stash of towels, but expect guests to follow post-hot tub etiquette.

The Mildewy Menace

Hot tubs may be used several times by the same person throughout a day or evening, and he or she should use the same towel whenever possible. In between uses, a towel should be hung over a railing that will not be damaged by contact with the damp cloth. This will, in turn, keep it safe from hot tub chemicals that may bleach or fade the fabric. This will also give it time to dry, and it won't end up as a moistened heap on the ground. However bright their pattern may be, towels left on the ground or the side of spa stairs are likely to be forgotten, and rediscovered by the host when tracing an unpleasant smell of mildew days later. Respect the host's kind loan, and keep a towel visible and as dry as possible when it is not in use.

Floss Is For Dental Care

While some behaviors may be perfectly acceptable when drying off after a shower at home, it is in poor taste to demonstrate some of these while enjoying a dip in a friend's spa. While drying oneself is a necessity, rolling up a cloth and using it as body floss (i.e., between the legs) is not, especially in mixed company. Be polite, gently pat dry the legs and inner thighs, and avoid scrubbing against less than proper areas of the body. Even if the spa experience is clothing-optional, it is fairly safe to assume the host would rather their guests not behave this way, if only to avoid having unsavory laundry to do later.

Cleanup Crew

A host is bound to remember their guests with gratitude when the used towels are brought inside. Much like offering or helping to clear the table after a dinner party, gathering up the towels for the host at the end of the party is thoughtful and well-received. This gesture saves the host a trip or two back and forth to the hot tub, and ensures that no towel is accidentally left behind with the hot tub supplies.
