A Plumber A Day Keeps The Leaks Away

Not many of us give a lot of thought to what plumbers do until we have water running across the floor or leaking profusely through the ceiling. Even then, we aren't particularly curious as to their profession. All we care about is getting the leak stopped before it causes anymore damage.

Plumbers are not really given the credit they deserve. Most of us look at them as simply people we call when we need a drain unplugged or a faucet replaced. These tasks are minimal in light of the duties a plumber with credentials can perform. They will methodically follow blueprints in the installation of plumbing in any new facility. The renovation of older buildings will require their expertise in updating and redesigning an entire system. Along with plumbing skills a certain amount of knowledge in carpentry is necessary as pipes often have to be installed through walls or studs within the walls.

Many plumbers will specialize in certain fields. They could choose to be steamfitters, pipelayers, and pipefitters which are different areas of expertise. The steamfitter works with systems that involve the movement of liquid or gas while it is under very high pressure. This profession can be somewhat dangerous in that there could be an explosion even when everything is done properly.

A pipelayer will set up and do the installing for systems that need piping. He, and yes even she, will work with underground fittings where pipes lay. These trenches have to be graded to make for the flow of water and/or waste disposal efficient. Welding, gluing and setting the pipes together are all part of the task.

Pipefitters will work with large buildings in the installation and maintenance of piping systems used to generate electricity. Heating and cooling systems are one example. The plumbing specialist can work in residential and commercial buildings. Anything that has to do with water coming into the facility, leaving the facility, along with waste disposal, are within their knowledge base. They are also experts at installing any plumbing fixture. Often an appliance will require a water line, such as an automatic ice maker on a refrigerator or a dishwasher hook-up.

Becoming a plumber requires a number of steps. A high school diploma is needed to get into an apprenticeship program of training or a two year degree from a community college or vocational program. They will work alongside a certified plumber to practice their trade. If anyone desires to work independently, these are mandatory requirements in acquiring a state license. In some states licenses are not even issued until a person has worked for two years as an apprentice.

Plumbers and their related trades make up some of the largest occupations on a construction site. When well trained in their field, the demand is high. Job growth is expected to remain at about ten percent through 2016 and as of May 2007 the average amount made per hour by these workers was around $23.00. If you happen to fall within the top percentage of your occupation, an annual salary of $75,000.00 or more can be expected. The lowest scale of annual salary would be in the area of $26,000.00 a year.

If it should become necessary for you to have to make an emergency call to a plumber, especially when not during normal working hours, the rate per hour can be quite costly. Now that you have an understanding of exactly what this trade entails, you may be a bit more receptive of the amount of knowledge they require to do their job well.
