A dissertation is also called a thesis report: an essay or paper that you submit to your concerned institute as a final document to support your degree. In some colleges or universities, a thesis or dissertation at the end of the academic session is compulsory for every attending student. It can also be written without any reference to an academic degree. So how exactly do you go about writing a dissertation or thesis essay? First of all, you'll have to map out a plan for the writing itself.
The best thing to do would be to plan to write a small amount each day instead of forcing yourself to work for hours at an end. If you force yourself, all you'll do is give yourself a headache and get really tired. You won't accomplish anything that way. So try and write only as much as you can handle in a specific time period. Write on and off, as you feel comfortable.
Dissertation writing usually takes up a huge chunk of your time and can often take way too long. Try and set deadlines for yourself so you can set your goals and meet them on time. Don't be too rigid, work your plan around more time if you think you need it, but don't slack off. That way, you can have your time doing your work and meet your deadlines too.
Another thing to keep in mind is that its best if you make an outline of what you plan to write; in short the topics and headlines you have in mind. Once you have your outline in front of you, you can easily work accordingly. If you work in a haphazard manner, going on from one section to another without completing either, you will end up with an incomplete and disorganized dissertation. Try and focus on your outlined topics and work in line with them to get a properly organized essay. Take notes as soon as you get an idea about a new point instead of waiting till the next time you sit down at your computer because you would most probably forget the point.
Keep a notebook handy so it's easier to take notes as the ideas occur to you. Try and set your writing are as a place where you can work in peace and quiet; trying to write in a place where the television is blaring, children are playing and pets are present will only result in chaos and frustration. Change your place of writing but always make sure it is somewhere you can actually concentrate on writing instead of being distracted by something else.
Sometimes while writing, you hit a phase when you're completely blank and just cannot come up with anymore material that you can actually put to use. This situation is also called "writer's block" and is very common among writers. To avoid this, try clearing your mind for a while and distracting yourself with something that relaxes you. Try taking walks, or watching television, or even reading if it helps. That way, you can come back to your work in a fresher state of mind.
