The Best Ways to Avoid a Collision

Let's face it: cars are amazing. Without these amazing inventions, we wouldn't be able to as connected as we are as a country.

But despite the amazing aspects of them, cars can also be very dangerous. There are so many hazards that we are exposed to once we buckle that seat belt and get out on the open road.

Luckily, most of them can be prevented; and the best way to prevent these problems from happening involves one person: you.

Yes, you as the driver are the one person that can prevent tragedy from happening. There are many ways that you can prevent a collision from happening.

So what exactly are some of these things? Keep in mind that these are only some of the things that you can take to heart, but that even one of these could save your life in a sticky situation on the road!

The first and most important thing you need to realize is that one of the main reasons that collisions happen is because of speed; and that means speed that gets out of control.

So what you can do to prevent these nasty accidents from happening is to slow down! There is no reason for you to be driving like Dale Earnhardt Jr. when you are on your way to the store to get groceries.

Maintaining your speed involves a lot of things. First, it involves always obeying the speed limit.

Yes, it is a good idea to "go with the flow" of traffic and if that means going a little bit over the limit, then that is fine. But most of the time, it is a good idea to stay within the speed limit that the law intended you to be in!

It also means to adjust your speed to the road's circumstances. This is important because conditions are always changing.

You can go the regular speed if it is a sunny day and there is nothing wrong with the road. But sometimes, this is a rare occurrence.

There are weather and traffic conditions that are constantly changing, and you need to be aware of those at all times. If you're going through a nasty storm or nasty traffic, you need to slow down and adjust your speed accordingly.

The next thing that you need to remember to do is to always be aware of your surroundings at all times. This will do wonders in mitigating the chances of a collision.

This also entails several different aspects. First, you need to keep your eyes peeled in front of you and always be looking ahead.

This means looking about 15 or 20 seconds in front of you. This will give you adequate time to slam on the brakes or swerve out of the way if something bad happens ahead of you in your lane.

It's also important to keep a sizeable distance between you and the car in front of you in case they slam on the brakes. Those who tailgate get into a lot more trouble once something else happens on the road and they are too close to avoid a bad thing from happening.

You need to not tailgate yourself, but you also need to stay away from others who are tailgaters. If you see someone in your rear-view mirror that is riding your tail, get away from them as soon as possible, so they don't rope you into an accident.

Also be aware of the cars that may be on the side of you. Observe the driver's behavior so that you can see if they are really paying attention or not.

If you look and see another driver that is distracted by a cell phone, piece of food, or another person in their car, it is better to get as far away from that driver as possible. By doing this, you can once again avoid an unnecessary collision.

Finally, you need to think about maintaining your car regularly in order to be safe. If you're trying to outlast the parts on your car to save a couple bucks, it's not worth your life!

Make sure your tires always have good tread on them and that they are regularly rotated. In addition, maintain your car in all other ways to make sure you are safe on the road.
