With the onset of personal computing came a whole new category of appliances necessary in the average American home. Even though the printer hooks up to the computer it needs to be assessed individually. Similar to the television needing a VCR and DVD to be optimized, so the printer optimizes the computer. Like a vacuum cleaner needs bags to be replaced, the printer needs its toner cartridge replaced occasionally. Just as the belt size and bag size is necessary, there are characteristics of the manufacturer's toner cartridge necessary for proper functioning of the printing equipment.

The immediate characteristics that need to be known are the make and model of the printer. The same maker will utilize a number of shapes and sizes of cartridge in their various models. For example, there is a difference between 9600 toner, 7050 toner and 7400 toner. To ensure the proper cartridge is bought the model type is an imperative piece of information. Another aspect that needs to be considered is whether ink refills will be used instead of buying replacement units. The make and model needs to be correct in order to acquire the correct set of refill instructions. Some manufacturers offer some models of cartridges to be refilled, while others are not.

For color printers there are additional toner considerations. An inkjet printer sprays minute droplets of toner in the proper ratio to achieve the desired color. Sometimes black has its own cartridge, while some older models spray all of the colors to blend into black. The most commonly used toner colors are black, cyan, magenta and yellow. It should be expected to replace the color toner cartridges on older machines more frequently, since they double as black toner in combination. The technology has progressed to the point that there is little difference between brand name products or an after market compatible version. Even refillable inks are compatible as far as print quality is concerned. Another version has all the colors in one unit. This system therefore only has one black and one color cartridge each.

One final consideration is whether picture quality printing will be utilized. Photo quality use is more expensive, as the toner sprays as finer droplets. Here quality is a consideration, as there are differences in print quality and how quickly the cartridge becomes empty.

The task of replacing is not difficult. Current software applications that come with the printer notify the user when toner needs to be replaced, as well as which colors need to be changed. Just ensure that the correct information is available when purchasing the devices. It is a simple procedure that even technologically-challenged individuals can carry out with little or no difficulty.
