If you have to write a research paper and worry that you "can't write," don't despair, because even if you're not a naturally talented writer there are many tips you can follow to improve your chances of getting a good grade on a research paper.

1. The number one tip for getting a good mark on a research paper is to follow your instructor's directions to the letter. That means choose an approved topic, use the resources you're allowed to use, keep the length as close as possible to the required length, format it correctly, and complete all interim steps your instructor requires, such as the completion of an outline.

2. The second most important tip for succeeding when writing a research paper is that you should ensure that you don't get behind. Saving everything for the last minute is a recipe for disaster. Break the task down into manageable batches. For example, your first night's "assignment" may be no more than coming up with an effective title and topic for your research paper. Each day you can proceed in small steps, and you won't be overwhelmed by the task.

3. You must gather resources effectively. Use the sources your instructor approves, including internet resources if possible. If your assignment includes the creation of note cards, make note cards. If your teacher is OK with making electronic note cards, you can easily find templates within Google Docs (such as the ENG4U Research Notes Template) for keeping notes online easily. For each note you make, cite the source in the proper form for your bibliography. This will save you tons of time later. Once you have gathered your notes, organize them by sub-topic.

4. Write an outline according to the sub-topics of your gathered notes. If your teacher wants a formal outline, make one that meets his or her formatting requirements. If not, at least make a list of topics you want to cover in your research paper. Include an "Introduction" and "Conclusion" as points on your outline.

5. The fifth step is actually writing the paper.

Start your introduction broadly and narrow it until you come to a thesis statement about the main points you will cover in your paper. The main points are the ones from your outline. Then you will write a paragraph or section for each of the points on your outline. Finally, you'll write a conclusion that will start with a re-worded thesis statement and broaden to a general conclusion.

6. Create your bibliography or cite sources you used according to the format specified by your instructor. Never try to claim others' ideas as your own, and be sure you have citations for all quotes and paraphrases.

7. Before turning in your research paper, let it "rest" overnight, and give it a final edit, spell check, and grammar check before turning it in. Having a friend read your paper is helpful too, because sometimes a different pair of eyes can catch mistakes more easily.

Follow your instructor's directions precisely, break down the writing of your research paper into manageable chunks of work, and avoid getting behind schedule, and you will have the best chance of getting a good mark on your research paper.
