Protection is a primal instinct. The need to keep as far away from harm as possible is as instinctual as breathing. The need to protect our property goes beyond the right to bear arms. While that is how people protected themselves in the Wild West those days are long gone. Not that there is no need to have a gun handy but alarm systems do most of the work these days.

Alarm systems have evolved quite rapidly over the years. They now come in so many varieties models and so on it boggles the mind. The important thing is to get a suitable match to your needs. There is no point of getting an alarm system so complicated you trip it every other day. That just would not do. You do not want to be equated to the boy who cried wolf!

The best thing to do is to arm yourself with some rudimentary knowledge of alarm systems before you venture to the store and buy something inappropriate or worse still inadequate.

That said there are two brand types of alarm systems still in general use today.

The first is the klaxon kind or rather the noisy banshee kind. These are usually manually activated and create such a din as to unmistakably let you neighbours know that you are in trouble. Depending on the kind of neighbours that you have they might either rush to assist or call for help since you are clearly in no position to do yourself. They are also meant to scare away the source of the threat. These alarms are usually pretty effective but the activation button should be kept out of the reach of children but accessible to everyone else. It is also prudent to have more than one panic button in the house incase you find yourself isolated.

The second brad class is the remotely monitored alarm system. These may have the bells going off as well as being monitored form a central control room. It is this central control room which then alerts the police. There are silent versions of this system as well. Which will not set off any shrill alarm bells but will silently alert the control room and the trespassers are apprehended while at their ill conceived heist.

Of the monitored systems there are several sub Variants that are quite effective. There are those that are activated by motions in restricted areas and automatically initiate a lock down of these areas. Such complex systems are only used by institutions or extremely wealthy individuals who might have a vault on their premises. There are passive infrared motion systems for the average home available but they are usually set up in places like the ground floor only when everyone else should be in bed.

While a bit of paranoia is acceptable there is no point of getting an alarm system so sophisticated it outstrips the value of what you are protecting. Burglars are liable to come steal the alarm systems instead! Happy hunting for the right system.
