As any homeowner who lives in an area of the country with a cold climate will proclaim, homeowners must get into the yearly habit of closing up the backyard pool for the winter. Winterizing also prevents the water from freezing which may damage the concrete and filters. When summer arrives, knowing that the pool was prepared properly will save time so that the family can enjoy the water immediately. Even when enjoying a warmer climate, dirt, insects and leaves can fall into the water, clogging the drain that make cleanup a dreadful chore, this is why automatic pool cleaners are in such demand.

When winterizing and closing up the backyard pool for the winter there are steps to take for success. First, be sure to test the pH of the water. The reason for this is to keep a perfect balance so as not to damage the concrete by creating stains or pits. The water should always be chemically balanced, not just to protect the bottom and sides, but to protect all swimmers. Be sure to also add a blue colored chemical kit made specifically for either in ground or above ground pools. This is what gives it a clean, clear, sparkling color. Next, be sure that the water is below the skimmer line, as this also gives protection from freezing. If the pool has an vinyl liner, this rule is even more important.

Draining the water from the pump and plumbing lines must be performed before closing up the backyard pool for the winter. This is called blowing them out. The procedure on how to do this is to simply use a shop vac, as they are safe to mop up water without fear of electric shock. Read all safety warnings first, of course, and follow their instructions. Make sure that plugs are immediately inserted just as the water is blown out. For optimal results using a Gizmo to seal the lines after applying non-stick tape will make for easy preparation in the summer because the non-stick allows for easier removal. Next, cover the pool completely with a recommended pool cover, and be sure to remove the plug from the filter and drain all water from it. There should also be an air relief valve in most instances, and that will need to be turned. The multiport valve needs to be turned to winter or winterize, and the pressure gauge removed. Be sure to drain the pump, place all small items in a basket so it is easy to find in the summer, and bring in the air pressure gauge. It is made of glass, so it will need to be protected over winter. Performing the right steps now will save many hours of work when summer arrives.
