What Is An Alcohol Breathalyzer Used To Do?

When an adult goes out to a bar or a place where adult beverages are served, it is likely that alcohol will enter his or her bloodstream. The substance causes no problems as long as the person imbibing it drinks responsibly. If that same person gets behind the wheel and has what the state he lives in determines to be too much alcohol in his bloodstream, he might be stopped and charged with a DUI or a DWI depending on what the laws of that particular state are. DUI means driving under the influence, while a DWI means driving while intoxicated. The difference is how much alcohol is calculated to be in the person's blood system.

An alcohol breathalyzer is a test used by the state police to give them an idea of how impaired a driver might be. The reading obtained helps the officer make the determination about whether he needs to make an arrest, issue a warning, or in some cases may eliminate the need for the standard tests used to determine whether or not a driver is fit to remain behind the wheel.

The police models are generally the most reliable, but they work the same way that the pocket models do. The user breathes into a mouthpiece and the electronics in the device measure the amount of alcohol in a person's breath based on the chemicals it detects. The portable breathalyzer models can at least let a person know if it is a good idea to call a cab home or find a designated driver.

An analyzer does a good job, but it is only accurate up to a point. If a user finds that the police insist that he had too much to drink, he may wind up in court. A driver can demand a blood test, although one is usually administered in these cases. The blood tests add an extra level of protection and of certainty to the process.

An alcohol breathalyzer is only used to determine if a person's blood alcohol level is above or below the legal limits. Even if a driver goes out and purchases a model independently it does not resolve him from the needs to drive responsibly and obey all traffic laws. As always, the best bet is not to drive when in doubt. The slogan that impairment begins with the first drink has become cliche, but it is also correct. A person can be charged with a DWI or DUI if he has other dangerous drugs in his system as well.
