Choosing A Locksmith In An Emergency

If you're reading this and you're not in an emergency situation requiring a locksmith, consider using the information here to help you find a highly qualified, reputable locksmith before you need one. Choosing a locksmith in an emergency situation often makes a stressful situation more stressful if you don't know what questions to ask.

Having the name of a good locksmith in your contacts list is just as important as having a good plumber or mechanic: you may not need one very often, but when you do, you want it to be someone you can trust.

One thing you have to be aware of when cold-calling automotive locksmiths is that there are locksmith "brokers" with web pages, phone book ads, and local phone numbers who are not reputable. When you call one of these local numbers, you're actually connected with someone located elsewhere, maybe even all the way across the country. This person may send out a locksmith who is unqualified and who will only accept cash. Furthermore, this person may charge you a disproportionately high price and could even damage your car.

If someone answers the phone with a generic name such as "Locksmith" or "Hello" rather than an actual company name, tread carefully. Ask for the name of the company. If the person on the phone is evasive, call elsewhere. With lost car keys, you should be able to get an estimate for all the work plus parts before the locksmith begins working on your car. Always inquire about additional fees (for mileage, after-hours, etc) before work begins.

In Illinois, locksmiths must be licensed. The name on the locksmith's vehicle should match that on the invoice. A Chicago locksmith with a license and insurance won't hesitate to show you identification.

If your car uses transponder keys, a good automotive locksmith will be able to clone a new key, regardless of what your car dealer may tell you. It takes special hardware and software to do this, but virtually every make and model car with transponder keys can be serviced by a locksmith and does not require the services of the car dealer. Car key replacement is a big part of their business, and most late model cars require transponder keys.

Once your new keys are made and you are ready to roll, you should receive an itemized invoice detailing parts, labor, service call charges, and any other charges such as mileage. The actual price charged should be identical or close to the amount you were quoted.

Remember, a locksmith is in a position of trust. You don't want just anyone dealing with your lost Lexus keys, but someone who is qualified, licensed, and insured. The best time to find a locksmith is when you don't need one. But if you do find yourself locked out of your car and can't find someone to bring you a spare set, remain calm and do what you can over the phone to check out the qualifications of any locksmith you consider hiring for the job. Hiring the first locksmith you call without asking questions can be risky.
