Finding someone who can help you with your taxes who really knows what he or she is doing and who is reliable and trustworthy can unfortunately be very tricky. There are a lot of questions you must ask in order to better your chance of finding someone who can do an honest job for you.

If you are not successful in finding someone that can honestly and knowledgably do your taxes for you, mistakes will be made and you will get in trouble with the IRS. As a result, you may have to pay a lot of extra fines.

You will need to be careful and ask a lot of questions even if a person claims to be a certified public accountant or a certified tax resolution specialist. It is especially important to find someone you can trust to help you if you have tax problems.

These problems may include things like delinquent tax returns, back taxes, payroll taxes, auditing issues and so forth. The first thing you should do when considering hiring a tax consultant of some sort is to ask for recommendations from people who have worked with tax consultants before.

Make sure that you only ask those whose opinions you trust. However, you should not only ask one person and then sign up to work with the person they said was good.

After you have a list of names, you will need to set up some interviews. Before you do this, you should look up the tax attorney/CPA/tax resolution specialist interview checklist.

This checklist will help you ask the questions that may help you catch those who are being untrustworthy or who simply do not know what they are doing. For example, there are some out there who simply want to earn money and they will not make sure you get all of the credits you deserve.

They will simply give you a large fee to pay in addition to whatever tax debt, IRS fees, penalties and so forth that you have been charged with. Before you go in for the interview try to make sure that you know what is going on with your taxes and things you will need to pay.

Decide whether or not you are dealing with income tax problems, business tax problems, estate tax problems, foundation or charity tax problems and so forth. In addition, you may need to decide whether you are simply dealing with federal or states taxes.

In some cases, you may even be dealing with taxes in multiple states. You may not even be in trouble yet, but you may have realized that something was wrong and that you are going to get into trouble with the IRS.

The worst case scenario that you will definitely need help with is if the IRS contacted you telling you there was a problem and then you tried to ignore them in order to pretend the problem was not there. An attorney can help you resolve these tissues.

Another thing that may be problematic are your records. If your receipts are not organized or if you do not know where your bills are, your tax consultant may also be able to help you get these things into order.

The consultant will also want to know things such as whether or not the IRS has visited your home or business before, demanded an in-person audit, garnished you wages, put in tax liens, or seized your property.

When these questions can be answered truthfully and fully, you will be able to know specifically what kind of tax help you need from someone. If you need a tax problem resolution consultant, be sure to compare the same types of titles to the same types of titles.

For example, you do not want to compare a certified public accountant with a tax lawyer. A tax lawyer can do certain things that a certified public accountant cannot do.

Certified public accountants are best at helping you organize your files and in filling out the tax forms. Meanwhile, a tax lawyer is best at helping you rectify your past problems and in bridging the gap between you and the IRS.

Admittedly, a tax lawyer is much more expensive than a certified public accountant. However, the abilities and practice that a tax lawyer has in working with the IRS are invaluable if you are in tax trouble.

When you go in to interview with a tax lawyer or CPA, you will want to decide whether or not you can trust him or her and whether or not he or she is really qualified to do his or her job. By keeping these things in mind, you will be able to find someone who can help you.
