If you are a parent then you will be well aware of the costs of raising your child. One of the major costs that you may have to bare when they get to the age of 16 or 17 will be that of helping them to learn to drive. Not only will you end up paying for lessons and perhaps even purchasing them a car, but you will also have to cover the car insurance. Of course, while you will want to ensure that they are fully covered and protected when they are driving, you won't want to spend more than you should. As such, here are some tips on how you can get more affordable auto insurance for your teenager.

It is important for you to make sure that your teenager understands how crucial it is that they maintain a good driving record. Not only will this impact upon the insurance that you are covering, but it will also have an impact upon insurance costs down the road that they will have to cover. If they can develop a good driving habits when they are younger, then these are likely to stay with them as they begin to get older.

Do not purchase your teenager a powerful vehicle or a new vehicle if you want to reduce the costs of insurance for the vehicle itself. Any new vehicle is going to need a comprehensive package which would cost more and a powerful vehicle in the hands of the teenager will most likely lead to more expensive insurance as well.

Shop around with providers who will offer cheaper rates of insurance for younger drivers. Often they will offer these cheaper rates in exchange for certain stipulations being met. For example, the teenager may not be able to drive past a certain time of night or may be restricted with where they can drive as well. If, however, they do meet these restrictions then the insurance costs will be lower.

It is important for your teenager to demonstrate responsibility if they want to achieve cheaper insurance rates as well. Responsibility can be demonstrated in a couple of different ways. One of these is simply by maintain good grades at school. If they maintain a B average or above then this will lead to reduced premiums.

Another way of showing responsibility is to go on a safety driving course. Find a suitable driving course in your local area and in list your teenager on it. These courses will not only teach good driving practice but they will also demonstrate to affiliated insurance companies that your teenager is responsible and mature.

If you do not want to pay for a standalone policy for your teenager then you may also want to look at the option of adding them onto your insurance policy. Of course, this is only applicable if you are a motorist yourself, and if you are and you have developed a good relationship with your insurance provider, then you can set it add your teenager onto your policy.

A final tip is to raise the deductible. Again, if you have purchased a standalone policy for them then raise the deductible as high as you can afford in order to reduce premiums.
