Social bookmarking refers to the practice of book marking or saving a website or blog that you enjoy reading. People keep blogs for all sorts of reasons, many are just blogs about life in general and a lot of people connect well on blogging sites such as Xoomba and Blogger Party.

Nowadays if you read a blog it's very likely that at the bottom of the entry there are a lot of buttons that relate to different bookmarking sites such as Stumble Upon, Digg or Twitter. If you have a Twitter account then there is a process by which you can automatically place a link to your latest blog post on Twitter, which gives the post a lot more publicity than it might otherwise not have had.

When a post gets a lot of attention it's referred to as going viral and when this happens you get a lot of visitors to your blog site. Many bloggers have Google ads on their blogs and if a visitor happens to click on one of those ads then this is counted as a payment to the blogger's Google account; Google Adsense.

When a blogger writes a new post and they want to attract subscribers to their blog, they add it to Google feed burner. When a blog post is listed in this way it's known as a feed. People can subscribe to your blog either via a Feed burner email, or by feed readers such as Google or Yahoo. A lot of bloggers nowadays have their blog as part of their website and they use Wordpress as a blogging platform.

When you use Wordpress you have access to what are known as plugins, these plugins are useful for getting your blog search engine optimized, submitting your blog to Feed burner and to make it available through an RSS (which stands for really simple syndication) feed. An RSS feed syndicates your blog so that it's widely available to anyone on the internet who wants to subscribe to your blog post.

Many people who have their blog on Wordpress also have a Twitter account, and they can display their latest comments on Twitter by way of a Twitter feed; they can also place an automatic link to their latest post on Twitter. If another Twitter user follows that link and enjoys reading the post then they may tweet it again (known as retweeting) for even more people to see.

Stumble Upon is a social bookmarking site where you can submit your own blogs and blog posts and you can submit other people's posts that you enjoy. When a post is submitted to a site like Stumble Upon, then it is available for hundreds of thousands of people to read and comment on.

People also use sites like Stumble Upon and Digg to promote their blog posts and attract more visitors to their blog, if they have Google Adsense or some other form of advertising, then extra visitors or traffic, can bring them extra income in the form of advertising money.

In the last few years blogging has taken off big time, sites such as MySpace and Twitter have given people's blogs added exposure.

For those people who own internet businesses or make a living through writing or website design, blog promotion is a serious matter. The more people that visit your blog, the more likely you are to get new clients and extra business, all because of a blog and some social bookmarking sites.
