There are several reasons why a city might need a new metro rail system. While each metropolis is different, many of the problems they face are similar.

Existing System Needs To Be Replaced
Many railway systems last for several years. Brunel's Great Western Railway is already 175 years old. The Tanfield Railway is more than 200 years old. But then not all railways, especially city rails, are lucky to last even more than 100 years. Many are decommissioned and need to be replaced with new ones. New tracks to accommodate larger trains, new terminal buildings to replace old structures, and new stations to accommodate more passengers are some of the reasons why an existing system needs to be replaced.

Change in Traffic Patterns
City railways are built depending on where people work and play. In a sense, a railway is there to expedite the existing traffic pattern. But continuous city planning, development and redevelopment can prompt changes in this patterns that make one area in the city obsolete and another booming. And with these changes come the need for a new city rail. Also, expansion of the city can cause an abrupt change in how people live and where people go. The need for public transportation that was caused by this change prompted the construction of new railway.

Expand Ridership Base
A railway may have been initially built to accommodate the population of the area. Over time, as the city population grew, the system reached its capacity and a need for a new railway was imminent. Singapore's growing population, economic growth, and land expansion has prompted several MRT/ LRT lines to be built over the last 15 years. Delhi's railway system has been continuously upgraded and expanded to lessen the overcrowding and to decongest existing railway system.

Modernization
City trains grow old and the technology they possess may not be as efficient as they were. Safety features many also need to be replaced along with the trains. Rehabilitation of existing railway system may be a must, especially if they have been in the service for more than 100 years. The New York City Subway opened its first line in 1904 and had been gradually improved and expanded. Now, modernization is required once more to respond to the changing requirements of the city as well as to make sure that the service remains safe.

A metro rail system is the city's artery. It moves people to work faster, safer and more economical. It allows the city to live, move, and breathe. Without a reliable metro rail system, the city streets will choke up and the services will come to a halt.
