In our increasingly complex industrial society bulk storage systems are important. Materials need to be stored safely and efficiently. Damage to materials through contamination or loss will be extremely costly. High performance of racking system is an essential aspect of productivity and therefore profitability.
As is the case in many spheres of economic activity there is a constant flow of new systems and materials coming on track. Whether it is a new business that is being set up, or an old one being improved, effective storage systems will play a vital role in profitability.
In order to maximise stock control and storage procedures the firm providing a high performance racking system will have to take into account the particular factors that characterise the client's business. The materials to be stored, is obviously one of the first things to consider. Size, weight, composition and value of the goods will all play their part in determining the design of the system.
Goods that can be stored on a pallet, such as bottled drinks and foodstuffs will demand shelves that can safely hold heavy loads and allow space for forklifts to manoeuvre. The shelves may not have bolts to allow for ease of rapid installation. However, such racks will have to carry heavy loads and be stacked up to thirty meters high so the materials must be strong and reliable. Pallets can be made of wood, recycled plastic or metal. The cost of each pallet and its strength relative to the materials to be placed on it will determine the materials used.
Small goods that cannot be easily placed on a pallet such as automotive parts or hardware will require different racks. To allow for ease of access to such material the shelves cannot be stacked too high or be too deep. The performance of the system will depend on the ease with which the store man can access the item that he needs easily. Those systems that require a man to lug a ladder into place before riskily and slowly ascending and descending will obviously waste time. However, available space will determine the ergonomics of the system.
Some long products such as pipes or planks need special shelving that allows the full length of an unbent item. Especially strengthened beams and cantilevered struts allow long items to be stacked in batches. The distance between the struts may be adjusted to allow for different size batches.
When space in a warehouse or storage room runs out a client may be faced with two options in order to accommodate a growing inventory. He may buy or rent another building, or he may create more space by constructing a mezzanine floor within an existing warehouse. Modular shelving can be used to adjust the size of the mezzanine floor and the space available in it, to best suit the needs of the client.
In any instance performance of racking system will depend upon the after sales service provided. Adjustments may be made at first, as needs become apparent, and later as changes in volumes and inventories necessitate adaptation. A client who does not himself have the expertise or equipment to make adaptations will appreciate after sales service which enables him to work with his provider so that his racking system becomes entirely adaptable to his needs.
