Every business owner understands that marketing is about making the right connections and building long term business relationships. Although there are many ways to market yourself and/or your business, one effective tool that should be utilized as a key marketing tool is the business card. Although the card is small and inexpensive to create, it is important to create a card that will leave a positive impression. It is essential that your card reflects your professionalism and that it contains all of your important information.

Below are a number of tips to creating a professional business card:

Color: A business card that contains colors such as a colored logo will really stand out. It is important to use colors that are professional, not tacky. As well, use colors that reflect your business. For instance, if it is a kid related business, bright colors are appropriate. If it is a law firm, use more subtle and medium to dark colors. The text should be black ink.

Business Card Design: When creating a traditional business card, use both sides of the card so that you will have plenty of white space to avoid overcrowding. The centre of the card is normally the focal point. This is the area where you will include such information as your name or business name, or your logo. It is important to have a consistent feel and look for the entire card.

Graphics and Pictures: Designs and pictures will catch the eye of the viewer of the business card. Adding a logo will make more of a professional impression. It should not be so prominent that it distracts the reader as you want a logo or other picture to catch attention so that the reader will want to learn more. As well, your logo on the card should be something that calls attention to your type of business.

Contact Information: It is essential that you provide the right contact information so the viewer will know how to reach you. You should include such information as: phone number (extension), cell phone number, email, and website address. As well, the business name is usually more boldly set in the card than the person's name

Tag Line: It is beneficial to include a tag line or catch phrase that will be remembered. It should impart the benefits of doing business with you. A catchy slogan can also give the reader of the card an idea of what you do. As well, the statement should answer the general potential client or customer question, "What is in it for me?"

To better promote your business or your profession, it is important to use all of the marketing tools available to you. Make sure that you make the most out of your business card as a marketing tool by creating a card that is professional and memorable. A business card often makes the first impression so you want to make sure that impression is positive and contains the right information.
