Factors to Keep in Mind before Selecting a New Pre Owned Vehicle

When looking to buy a used car, there are many things to consider. Before doing any serious shopping, make a list of features that are preferred and those that are must-haves. If there is anything that would prevent the person from buying the automobile, this should be put at the top of the list. Here are a few items to consider when looking for a new pre-owned vehicle.

Budget
After looking at their budgets, people should know how much money they can afford to spend on a car or truck. Factor in monthly payments, insurance, fuel, registration, inspection, title, taxes and monthly maintenance. Depending on the make and year of the car, expect at least some repairs. Those who are not mechanically inclined should avoid purchasing a vehicle in extreme disrepair or with a lot of mileage on it.

Purpose
What is the car's primary use? Short occasional trips to church and the grocery store will affect a vehicle very differently than a daily long-distance commute to the city with traffic over bridges, through tunnels ad down highways. A work truck, for example, should be sturdy. Consider whether a child safety seat will need to be installed in the car and, if so, whether there is enough room.

Driver
The age, preference and experience of the primary driver of the vehicle is one of the most important elements of finding the right used vehicle. If a person cannot drive a standard shift, they either need to learn how or purchase one with an automatic transmission. Teenagers may be slightly more adventurous in a car than their parents. Look for automobiles with high safety impact test results and those known for reliability on the road.

Repair
Carefully look over the vehicle to see what type of shape it is in. Look for physical damage to the frame, as well as dents and dings. Check the mileage and year of manufacture. Pop the hood and see what the engine looks like. Feel the hoses and examine them for cracks and swollen places. Look underneath the vehicle. See if there are any fluid leaks on the ground beneath. There may be oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze or brake fluid.

Test Drive
Do not buy a used automobile sight unseen if it is avoidable. The test drive will be a prime indicator of what the vehicle will be like on a daily basis. Listen to the engine. Any shrieks or knocks may be signs of a problem. The engines idle should not race. When the car goes into gear, it should be smooth. Watch for smoke coming from the tailpipe or from under the hood. Make sure that all signals and lights work. Check the radio and windshield wipers for functionality.
